The Greek Composers Union (GCU) was instituted in June 8, 1931 and its purpose, according to its first memorandum of association, is to protect and serve the idea of the greek music creation, to develop the solidarity between the Greek Composers and to watch over the ethic and material interests.
The first Committee had Dionisio Lavranga as President and Committee Members: Rodio, Kalomiri, Varvogli, Kaisari, Mitropoulo, Kondi, Sklavo, Hatziapostolou, Lavda and Prokopiou. From that time until today, the GCU is working with eagerness, consistency and decisiveness for the success of its purposes without discontinuation, even in the years of German bondage (1941-1945). Members were and still are the whole number of the Greek Composers, mostly of the serious music, but also composers with different style, like popular music, music for theatre etc.
